Bed / border design & planting

Do you sometimes come home from the garden centre with a new plant and wonder where you are going to plant it and then you cannot find the right place for it? All plants have their own characteristics and need the right conditions to grow well, such as the correct sun conditions, soil and shelter. Careful consideration should be given to the spacing between plants so that, as they mature, the area does not become overcrowded which could cause the plants to compete for moisture and nutrients.

We can design a planting scheme for your bed or border. We will take into account all the aspects of good planting design such as the balance of height and spread, texture, colour harmony and contrast (flowers and foliage), scent, seasonal interest and plant shape to create an attractive area that will flourish over the seasons.

We discuss your requirements with you before we start the design. The planting scheme could be formal or informal, such as cottage garden or prairie, depending on the style of your house and garden. It is important to ensure there is unity in the final design. You may want a low maintenance garden or a wildlife friendly garden to attract bees, butterflies and birds. We will gain ideas from you of your favourite plants and favourite colours and also identify plants that you do not like or you already know do not grow well in your garden. We can incorporate any existing plants into the scheme as well.

We will provide a plant list and quote before any work begins so you know exactly how much it is going to cost. Once you are happy with the plan and the costs we will agree a date for planting and purchase the plants on your behalf. We can condition the soil if you wish before we start planting and can apply a weed control membrane and bark chips to keep those weeds at bay.

If you have plants already that need planting we are of course happy to plant them for you. If you just want a couple of plants putting in to fill a gap we can do this for you too. We can also plant bulbs in the autumn ready to bring some much-needed colour in spring or plant summer-flowering bulbs in spring.
